It is hard to get facts about women rights before Islam. Islamic scholars distorted many facts about Arabians before Islam. For history is written by the winners. But we do know something about women's rights BEFORE ISLAM from the story of Khadijah, Muhammad's first wife.
Khadijah was an independent business woman, she was the richest of Quraishi tribes, she had the largest convoy of camel who traded with Palestine and Syria, had married two men before Muhammad, she choose her own husbands, in fact she choose Muhammad who was HER OWN EMPLOYEE! When her husbands died, she inherited every penny.She did not need a guardian but Muhammad did require a guardian for himself to marry her!!!

Women to stay at home, cover from head to toe, not allowed to engage in business on their own, have to ask male guardian to get married, get least inheritance, subordinate to men...
